Tomatoes are a staple in most of our homes. But did you know that canned tomatoes are really bad for you? If you’re using canned tomato sauce, you may be putting you and your family at risk for health problems.
Bisphenol-A, A Toxic Chemical
BPA liners are added to the inside of cans to prevent the liquid inside from coming into contact with the metal in the can.
BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960s. BPA (Bisphenol A) mimics estrogen in our bodies, binding to the same receptors as natural female hormones which might be damaging. BPA is a hormone disruptor that has been linked in animal studies to cancer, obesity, infertility and diabetes.
The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) found traces of BPA in 93% of urine samples they took for a 2004 study. So all of us have that potentially damaging chemical in our bodies. Unfortunately, most of us have it in our bodies:
One reason people may be concerned about BPA is because human exposure to BPA is widespread. The 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found detectable levels of BPA in 93% of 2517 urine samples from people six years and older. The CDC NHANES data are considered representative of exposures in the United States. Another reason for concern, especially for parents, may be because some animal studies report effects in fetuses and newborns exposed to BPA.³
Why Canned TOMATOES ?
Though all canned products containing BPA pose dangers to your health. However, canned tomatoes are even worse compared to other products. As Prevention.com reported, canned tomatoes made the list of foods that experts don’t eat. Tomatoes are acidic and will react . Why? Tomatoes are very acidic and react with the metal in the cans. Tomatoes’ acidity draws out more of the BPA into the food from the lining.
The Solution:
- Choose tomatoes sauce in glass bottles
- Make your own tomato sauce and bottle it at home
